Flashcards — CPL-H Area VIII Emergency Operations (Lessons 20–23)

ENG
Engine failure in a hover?
Hovering autorotation: hold heading, slight settle, cushion with collective, land level.
ENG
Engine failure at altitude?
Enter autorotation (collective down, airspeed, RPM, spot); always know your landing spot.
OEI
OEI Task applies to?
Multiengine helicopters only — N/A to the single-engine R44.
VRS
Three VRS conditions?
Powered flight, descent > ~300 ft/min, airspeed below ETL. Adding collective worsens it.
VRS
VRS recovery?
Forward cyclic to regain airspeed/ETL (or Vuichard). Prevention: keep airspeed up, limit sink.
RPM
Low rotor RPM recovery?
Lower collective and manage throttle/power per POH; condition a response to the low-RPM horn.
ROLL
Dynamic rollover recovery?
Smoothly lower the collective — not opposite cyclic.
LOWG
Robinson low-G recovery (SFAR 73)?
Immediately apply gentle aft cyclic to restore positive G BEFORE any lateral cyclic; never abrupt forward cyclic/pushover (mast-bumping risk).
LTE
Loss of tail-rotor effectiveness?
Uncommanded yaw at low airspeed/high power in certain winds; pedal, reduce collective if able, gain airspeed.
IIMC
Inadvertent IMC (VFR heli)?
Control by instruments, climb for terrain, turn toward VMC, get help; don’t scud-run.
